Renewable energy generation in India has grown dramatically over the last five years, rising by 46%, according to monthly data published by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Saur Energy analysed the first eight months of each financial year from 2021-22 to 2025-26 to understand how renewable power has expanded during this period.

The data shows a clear trend: as India installs more renewable capacity, actual clean-energy generation has been steadily replacing output from coal-based power plants. Renewable generation (including large hydro) increased from 213.21 billion units (BU) in the first eight months of 2021-22 to 311.95 BU in the same period of 2025-26.

Overall Power Production Rises

This growth has also pushed up overall electricity generation in the country. India produced 886.87 BU of electricity during the first eight months of 2021-22, which climbed to 1,103.99 BU in 2025-26 — a 24.5% increase. The numbers highlight how renewables are gradually taking a larger share of the country’s energy basket.

The share of thermal power fell from 72.25% in 2021-22 to 69.10% in 2025-26. Meanwhile, renewables (including hydro) rose from 24.04% to 26.03%, signalling a slow but steady shift toward cleaner energy sources.

Solar Sees Highest Jump

Among all renewable sources, solar showed the most significant jump. Solar’s share in the generation mix grew from just 4.55% in 2021-22 to 9.24% in the current financial year. Wind and large hydro generation, however, saw a marginal decline over the same period as per the CEA data.

Overall, the numbers point to a continued rise in clean-energy generation as India scales up its renewable energy capacity and works toward a greener grid.
