India’s RE Additions More Than Double in the First Seven Months of FY26 Photograph: (Archive)
India’s renewable energy installations almost doubled in the first seven months of the 2025–26 financial year (FY26), data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) showed.
The country added 24.27 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity between April and October 2025, surpassing the 23.8 GW installed during the entire previous fiscal year. In the same period of FY25, India had added only 10.3 GW of solar capacity, marking a sharp year-on-year increase.
Wind energy additions also saw a significant rise, with 3.56 GW installed so far in FY26, compared with 1.8 GW in the corresponding period last year.
RE Capacity Additions
Overall, India’s total renewable capacity additions reached 27.92 GW in the first seven months of FY26, up from 12.6 GW during the same period in FY25, the data showed.
In October alone, India added 2.59 GW of solar capacity, nearly double the 1.35 GW installed in October last year. Wind capacity additions in October stood at 476 megawatts (MW), compared with 353.8 MW a year earlier. Total renewable additions during the month reached 3 GW, up from 1.71 GW last year.
Solar Capacity at 129 GW
India’s cumulative installed solar capacity now stands at 129.92 GW, comprising 98.72 GW of ground-mounted projects, 22.42 GW of grid-connected rooftop systems, 3.33 GW from hybrid projects (solar component), and 5.45 GW of off-grid installations, according to MNRE.
The impetus in the installations seems to have stemmed from the increased tendering and allocations, a pre-defined tender trajectory target given to India's leading renewable energy implementing agencies like NTPC, SECI, SJVN, NHPC and others. The rise in the installations under the PM Surya Ghar also seems to have bolstered the growth of the slow-moving market,
