Indian Railways has reported significant advancements in integrating solar energy across its vast rail network, marking a decisive shift toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation. As of the latest update, the national transporter has solarised 2,626 railway stations, a move that is actively reducing energy costs while enhancing the environmental efficiency of daily operations.
The momentum for solar adoption has seen a sharp uptake in the current financial year. Data indicates that up to November, Indian Railways successfully added 318 new stations to its solar network.
With these latest additions, the total count of solar-powered stations now stands at 2,626.
Remarkable Growth Since 2014
As per the Ministry of Railway, Indian Railways has commissioned 898 MW of solar power capacity by November 2025. When compared to the installed capacity of just 3.68 MW in 2014, the current network represents a growth of nearly 244 times over the last decade.
The deployed solar capacity is being utilised to meet diverse energy requirements across the network. Out of the total 898 MW commissioned, the majority share, 629 MW, is dedicated to traction purposes, directly supporting electric train operations.
The remaining 269 MW is allocated for non-traction needs, ensuring power supply for station lighting, railway workshops, service buildings, and residential quarters. This balanced energy mix not only lowers reliance on conventional power sources but also enhances the overall operational efficiency of the rail system, the Ministry said.
The aggressive rollout of solar installations across stations, buildings, and railway land is central to meeting the growing energy demands of the network sustainably.
