In another significant initiative towards solar application, Indian Railways has launched the first batch of non-AC coaches fitted with flexible solar panels.

These solar panels will help run the fans, lights and mobile charging points.

The initiative is taken by the Indian Railways Organization for Alternative Fuels (IROAF) and the first batch was inaugurated by Ravindra Gupta, Member Railway Board.

Besides saving of Rs 3 crore per coach, the initiative also aims at massive carbon dioxide reduction.

Each coach, when fit with the solar panels, would generate 15-20 kWh of electricity per day.

Presently, the launched coaches will run between Sitapur and Rewari and the next batch would be targeted between the Varanasi-Lucknow run.

This was the second installation after IROAF installed conventional PV solar panels on six trailer coaches of diesel-electric multiple unit trains.
