As the headline-grabbing Nifty and Sensex indices rise to yearly highs, there is a palpable feeling of being left behind among the green pack, and of course, the broader mid and small-cap universe. Of course, this is nothing new, as these stocks usually need more than early signs of a rally to catch fire, and once they do, they do move much faster as well. That will be clear to any layperson who checks out the annual 52 Week highs of stocks in the green pack versus their current price. Most are 15-40% off their highs.
This miss in performance is certainly not for lack of results, as many have delivered in their numbers, while some have, of course, disappointed. Proving that the market can be swing to both extremes as well.
Today, it was the turn of Waaree Energies to stage a smart recovery after the damage to the stock price yesterday from news of Income tax department visits to the firms offices. For now, it does look like the issue is not significant. Newly listed Emmvee, which had risen sharply yesterday, duly corrected today, leaving investors with little idea of what to expect, even as the firm continues to stay well over its IPO price. Something that can't be said of Vikram Solar, for instance, which is almost 7% below its IPO price, and is struggling to find a growth spurt. Pace Digitek, another interesting firm that is a proxy for storage for now, rose smartly today, before giving up some of the gains, but even this Bengaluru-based firm stayed above its IPO price.
With some heavy-duty clean energy IPOs still due, investors should make their own judgments from these recent listings.
