The green pack continued to exhibit strength today, even as other market indices struggled to register and sustain gains. Stocks making stronger gains today have much lost ground to recover, and to that extent, the prices still seem to be going through a recalibration after being pushed down more than expected. The bigger story remains the strong capacity additions in solar and wind, as seen in the 10-month numbers so far, that place the total at almost 40 GW. With February and March usually strong months, a fresh high for Fy 2026 seems to be a given.
The worrying factor would be the slow addition to cell manufacturing capacity, even as total module capacity on the ALMM list has crossed 162 GW, in line with projections. With the June deadline fast approaching, buyers would be comfortable with a cell making capacity of at least 50-60 GW to keep a leash on prices. While on prices, the sharp downturn in silver prices has done much to tamp down hopes of a further price hike, and other input price pressures are also expected to ease somewhat, allowing more breathing space to developers and manufacturers alike.
Many manufacturers are also dusting off plans to export to the US, now that the trade deal is closer, and it is becoming increasingly obvious that Indian makers would be locked in a struggle with Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia for a share of the US market, where domestic capacity is also significant now.
At a stock level, we continue to wait and watch on the direction this week, before declaring it the end of winter for the green pack as well.
