India, in partnership with the United Nations, has expanded green energy access to 10 Pacific island nations by providing solar power systems to 12 public buildings. The initiative forms part of the USD 150 million India-UN Development Partnership Fund, established to support sustainable development projects across the Global South.
According to the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, the project has installed solar energy systems across public buildings in 10 island countries.
The installations are designed to meet the electricity needs of essential community facilities such as government offices, schools, and healthcare centres.
Local Capacity Building
Alongside infrastructure deployment, India’s clean energy initiative focused on empowering local communities through skill development. A total of 74 local technicians have been trained to operate and maintain the newly installed solar systems, to ensure long-term sustainability.
The training program equips these technicians with the knowledge to manage renewable energy resources independently and to expand similar systems in the future.
Long-Term Environmental Benefits
The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) stated that the project benefits over 16,500 people across the participating nations. Over the next 25 years, the solar-powered systems are expected to help avoid nearly 9,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Other successful examples supported by the Fund include solar pumping systems in Haiti that improved access to water for more than 40,000 people in rural communities. Similarly, in Fiji, the Fund has helped introduce solar power to operate the country’s State House.
Established in 2017, the India-UN Development Partnership Fund is managed in collaboration with the UN and funded by the Government of India. It intends to advance the goals of South-South cooperation by enabling developing nations to share resources and expertise.
