India Hits Historic 10 GW Solar Milestone In 4 Months Of 2025 By Manish Kumar/ Updated On Wed, May 14th, 2025 Highlights : The momentum is set to continue at least to June 2025, when the 100% ISTS exemption is set to start winding down India Hits Historic 10 GW Solar Milestone In Early 2025 India has achieved a new milestone in its renewable energy journey by adding more than 10 GW of solar capacity in the first four months of 2025, marking the highest-ever solar capacity addition during this period in the last five years. The latest data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) confirms this. Latest data revealed that India’s solar capacity has touched 108 GW by the end of April 2025. Between January and April 2025, India installed a total of 10,080.89 MW of solar power, accompanied by a significant increase in wind energy capacity, with 2,895.39 MW added. Combined, the total renewable energy capacity installed during these four months reached 13,223.65 MW, a clear indication of the nation’s accelerating green energy efforts. On the other hand, the latest data from MNRE said that in the month of April 2025 alone, India added 2.3 GW of new solar capacity, 1 GW of wind capacity, taking India’s total renewable capacity to 175 GW. The momentum is set to continue at least to June 2025, when the 100% ISTS exemption runs out. Achievements of 2024 This performance builds on the impressive achievements of 2024, when India added 9,319 MW of solar and 1,425 MW of wind, totaling 10,871 MW of renewable energy during the same period. In 2023, the figures stood at 3,775 MW of solar and 938 MW of wind, with a total renewable capacity addition of 4,792 MW in the first four months. Going further back, the January to April period of 2022 saw the addition of 5,990.95 MW of solar and 445 MW of wind, summing up to 6,520 MW of renewable installations. In 2021, India added 3,036 MW of solar and 786 MW of wind, totaling 3,857.78 MW. The steady growth in renewable energy capacity year after year highlights India’s determination to meet its clean energy goals. In just two years, solar additions in the January to April period have nearly tripled, underlining the country’s rapid scale-up in implementation and the rising investor confidence in the sector. Wind Resurgence In 2025 Wind energy has also witnessed a resurgence in 2025, with capacity additions more than doubling compared to the same period in 2024, pointing to a more balanced growth across renewable segments. According to sector experts, this robust performance reflects India’s strong policy framework, ongoing infrastructure development, and growing focus on hybrid and energy storage solutions. The momentum generated in the early months of 2025 sets a solid foundation for the country to achieve its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
