India Added 87,397 kms Of Power Lines In Last 6 Years: Power Ministry

Union Power Minister R.K Singh in his written reply to the Parliament informed the House that, the national grid national electricity grid capacity has been expanding in line with the increasing electricity demand and capacity.

He said that, till 31st October 2023, based on the MNRE data, about 179 GW Renewable Energy capacity (including hydro) was installed for the Indian Grid. The generation capacity has increased on an average about 16,000 circuit km of transmission lines and 75,000 MVA of transformation capacity (220 kV and above voltage level) are being added per year in the country.

India’s reached the total Installed Capacity (in MW) at 1,78,982 and solar capacity reached 72,018 MW. Based on its 2022-23 India target, the power line in 2023 has achieved the 14,581 km Actual Power Line (in circuit km) 14,625. Moreover, till 1^st October 2023 solar installed capacity reached 72,018.

Transmission lines (220kV and above) set up in the country in the last five years:

It means that, country’s national grid is fully capable of accommodating the generation from existing renewable energy capacity. The union minister informed to the parament that, the country has achieved the target for setting up transmission lines of (220kV and above), in the last five years. In totality, he mentions that the national grid is capable of accommodating the generation from existing Renewable Energy capacity.

In the past, Union MNRE and Power Minister RK Singh has boasted about the transformation of India’s grid. He claimed that with the rise of renewable power and the growth of other fuel sources, the transmission lines in the country have expanded in every nook and corner of the country, setting new records. He also said that after the BJP government came into Power at the Centre, the power transmission network has seen a surge in its growth. The government has even proposed and started working on dedicated green corridor projects.
