Honda Cars India has confirmed that its first all-electric model will be introduced in the country between April 2026 and March 2027. The announcement was made by Kunal Behl, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Honda Cars India, marking a significant step as the automaker finally enters the fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) segment in India.
While rivals such as Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Mahindra already have multiple EVs on sale, and brands like Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are set to debut their first EV options in the next 3-5 months, Honda has so far limited itself to hybrid technology. With the new confirmed timeline, the Japanese automaker will join the all-electric race by late 2026.
Entirely New Model
The company is working on an entirely new model instead of electrifying its existing ICE portfolio, contrary to what was speculated earlier - that Honda’s first EV would be based on its recently launched Elevate SUV.
Though Honda has not revealed the exact body type, the debut EV is expected to be a midsize SUV positioned against the Hyundai Creta EV, MG ZS EV, and Maruti e-Vitara.
Charging Infrastructure and Dealership Readiness
Honda is also synchronising its product launch with charging infrastructure expansion. The carmaker has started setting up DC fast-charging facilities at its dealerships to reduce range anxiety for prospective buyers.
These readiness measures are expected to be in place within the next 8-12 months, ensuring a supportive ecosystem by the time the new model hits Indian roads.
Current Line-Up and Market Positioning
Presently, Honda Cars India retails a limited range of models, including the City, Amaze, Elevate, and the strong-hybrid City e:HEV.
Unlike competitors with wider portfolios and CNG offerings, Honda has a smaller presence in the market, especially after discontinuing models like the Brio, Jazz, Mobilio, and CR-V due to weak demand. Entering the EV space with a new nameplate is seen as an attempt to strengthen the brand positioning and expand its modest line-up.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Limited (HMSI), a subsidiary of Japanese auto major, is also set to add a new manufacturing plant to produce electric two-wheelers adjacent to its Narasapura plant in Kolar district at an investment of INR 600 crore.
