Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy RK Singh recently shared data on projects implemented under the rooftop solar programme in India. As per the shared data, Gujarat installed the maximum cumulative capacity (with or without CFA) with 3,264.93 MW, followed by Maharashtra with 1,905.80 MW and Rajasthan with 1,074.39 MW. The minister gave state-wise details of the number of rooftop solar systems installed in households and elaborated on Central Financial Assistance (CFA) disbursements under Phase II of the scheme.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has been implementing the scheme since August 2019. Under the program, MNRE disburses subsidies to residential solar prosumers.

In his written reply to the Parliament, the Union Minister mentioned, “As of 31 December 2023, a cumulative capacity of 10.7 GW of grid-connected solar rooftop capacity has been installed in households and commercial and industrial (C&I) sector buildings. A total of 6.7 lakhs grid-connected solar rooftop systems with a cumulative installed capacity of 2.76 GW have been installed in households under the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Program (Phase II).”

It is noteworthy that the Union government, since the start of 2024, has brought several reforms in the residential rooftop solar segment. In January this year, the MNRE increased the subsidies for rooftop solar consumers up to Rs 18,000 per kW. It later also brought out a notification to ease the process of preparation of Technical Feasibility.

Several projects are also in the fray in Gujarat. SJVN Green, Coal India, and SAEL Industries have been awarded the 600 MW solar power project which will be set up at Gujarat Industries Power Company in Khavda while Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), a renewable energy (RE) company and a solar PV developer, has recently operationalized 551 MW solar capacity in Khavda, Gujarat, to supplying power to the national grid.
