Green Stocks Aug 22- Large Caps Struggle, Rest Gain On Choppy Day Photograph: (Archive)
Even as markets struggled to close the week on a positive note—ultimately ending in the red—the green energy pack saw a mixed performance. Large players such as Adani Green, Tata Power, JSW Energy, and Waaree Energies followed the broader market trend and slipped into negative territory, while several smaller firms managed to finish the week on a stronger note. The resilience among some players bodes well for what promises to be a testing week ahead, with the August 27 deadline for a fresh round of India tariffs looming large.
Vikram Solar’s market debut will also take place under these conditions. Encouragingly, both for the company and the sector, the stock continues to signal a premium listing next week.
For now, the strongest segment within the green pack is the EPC players, with all stocks benefiting from healthy order books and strong bidding opportunities. This group is expected to exhibit continued strength in the near term.
The real space to watch, however, is manufacturing—led by Waaree, Premier, and Vikram Solar. Just three years ago, it would have been difficult to imagine all three as listed companies, and yet here they are. Alongside many other solar manufacturing firms that have gone public over the past two years, they are now entering a new phase of growth and challenges, as the market braces for overcapacity and intense domestic competition over the next two quarters. Firms that sharpen their focus on marketing and quality will emerge stronger, though some surprises are likely along the way.
On the developer side, sentiment remains subdued. Top players such as NTPC Green, SJVN, and Acme Solar are still struggling to gain momentum, while diversified majors like Tata Power need stronger triggers to drive directional moves.
Heading into the weekend, investors in the green pack certainly have much to consider.
