GPIL Expands Into Battery Storage and Manufacturing With 20 GWh BESS Plan

Godawari New Energy Private Limited (GNEPL), a subsidiary of Godawari Power and Ispat Limited (GPIL), has revised its investment plans for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to support its capital expenditure and working capital needs. In a regulatory filing, the company said it has expanded the first phase of the project from 10 GWh to 20 GWh and raised the total investment from ₹700 crore to ₹1,625 crore. The expansion will be carried out in two phases.

Under Phase I, GNEPL will increase capacity from 10 GWh to 20 GWh with an investment of ₹1,025 crore in FY26–27. In Phase II, the company plans to double capacity further, expanding from 20 GWh to 40 GWh in FY28–29 at an additional investment of ₹600 crore.

The company said the decision to scale up the first phase was driven by the availability of a single-line manufacturing unit capable of producing 20 GWh of BESS annually. This setup is expected to improve land utilisation, reduce building and structural costs, and lower the overall investment required for the 20 GWh line. With a single unit handling higher volumes, GNEPL also expects savings in manufacturing costs and improved operating margins.

The 20 GWh project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in Q1 FY2027–28. Funding for the project will come partly from debt raised by GNEPL and partly from equity infusion by GPIL, using the company’s internal accruals in one or more tranches.

GPIL Scales Up BESS Plant to 20 GWh, Enters Battery Packs and Containers

GPIL said the latest announcement follows its earlier disclosure dated November 14, 2025, when it had informed investors about its investment in GNEPL to meet the capital expenditure and working capital requirements for setting up a BESS plant.

Chhattisgarh-based GNEPL was incorporated on June 25, 2025, and is currently in the process of setting up the 20 GWh BESS plant under the first phase. The subsidiary registered its office in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on the same date and has announced plans to begin operations in Maharashtra on September 30, 2025. The company has a net worth of ₹25.50 crore.

GPIL had earlier, on December 12, 2025, announced plans to establish a Battery Energy Storage System manufacturing unit, an initiative it had first disclosed on August 5, 2025. At the time, the company said it would set up a 10 GWh BESS manufacturing facility to produce battery packs and containers through its subsidiary GNEPL, with an initial investment of ₹700 crore.
