In a major boost to India’s renewable energy infrastructure, GoodEnough Energy announced on Tuesday the commissioning of a 7 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The facility officially stands as the largest of its kind in the country, marking a critical milestone in India's journey toward energy self-reliance and grid stability.

Scaling for a Greener Future

The commissioning of the 7 GWh plant is only the first phase of an aggressive growth strategy. GoodEnough Energy confirmed plans to more than triple its capacity, aiming for 25 GWh of BESS production within the next three years.

This expansion aligns with India's broader environmental mandates, the company said. The central government has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2030. To keep such a massive green grid stable, experts estimate the nation will require approximately 230 GWh of energy storage to manage fluctuations in power supply and demand.

Reducing Dependence on Imports

Historically, Indian renewable energy projects have been heavily reliant on battery imports, primarily from China, which has long dominated the global energy storage supply chain.

To encourage the domestic shift, the Indian government approved 94 billion rupees in funding in 2023 specifically for BESS equipment manufacturing. This program offers financial incentives covering up to 40% of the capital costs for qualifying projects, providing a vital cushion for homegrown startups to compete with international players.
