GIGA Storage Enters Germany with 1,400 MWh Battery Project

Dutch battery energy storage developer GIGA Storage has entered the Germany market with the acquisition of Project Albatross, a 350 MW / 1,400 MWh large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS). The project was originally developed by Germany based Isenau Projects, a specialist in utility-scale energy storage systems, from initial concept through to construction readiness.

Situated near Merzen in Lower Saxony, Project Albatross is set to play a key role in strengthening grid stability in one of Germany’s core energy transmission corridors. Once operational, it will provide vital services including frequency regulation, congestion management, and renewable energy integration — all crucial for supporting Germany’s energy transition and decarbonisation targets.

Backed by InfraVia Capital and Technical Expertise

GIGA Storage will contribute development capital, technical capabilities, and operational expertise to advance Project Albatross to full construction readiness. The acquisition is financially supported by InfraVia Capital Partners, a leading European infrastructure investor and the majority shareholder in GIGA Storage.

Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage, stated, “Our ambition is to develop and operate multiple gigawatts of energy storage capacity across Europe. With the support of InfraVia and a growing project pipeline, we are well-positioned to support energy security and sustainability in key markets.”

Sven Moos, Managing Director of Isenau Projects, welcomed the partnership: “This transaction reflects our dedication to delivering high-quality BESS projects tailored to grid and investor needs. Our shared commitment to innovation and the energy transition makes this collaboration a natural fit.”

Expanding Northern European Footprint

GIGA Storage currently designs, finances, and operates large-scale battery systems across the Netherlands and is now expanding its footprint across Northern Europe. Isenau Projects, meanwhile, continues to focus on grid-scale BESS development with an active pipeline of 1.7 GW in Germany.

The acquisition of Project Albatross marks a significant step in GIGA Storage’s European growth strategy and underscores the increasing role of large-scale storage in Europe’s energy landscape.
