Gentari & AWS Ink 80MW Wind Energy Deal in Tamil Nadu
Clean energy firm Gentari has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for an 80 MW wind power project in Tamil Nadu. The company shared the details in a press release, stating that the project is targeted to commence operations in mid-2027.
The project is expected to generate approximately 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually. This follows a collaboration agreement in 2023 between AWS and Gentari, under which Gentari supported Amazon’s efforts to decarbonize its India transportation network by working with third-party delivery service partners to electrify their transport vehicles. Under that earlier partnership, Amazon committed to deploying 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in its India delivery fleet by 2025. The agreement focused on Gentari providing electric vehicles and fleet management services for Amazon’s third-party delivery partners.
The latest PPA marks a significant step toward the companies' shared goal of developing new, cost-effective, utility-scale renewable energy projects.
Amazon's Previous Wind Projects in India
American multinational technology company Amazon, earlier this year, in February, invested in three wind energy projects across India. The wind farms in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are expected to contribute over 379 MW of clean energy. These include a 100 MW wind farm at CleanMax Koppal in Karnataka, a 99 MW project at BluPine Solapur in Maharashtra, and a 180 MW project at JSW Energy Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu.
About The Project
The latest PPA signing was undertaken with a document exchange ceremony between AWS and Gentari. Gentari was represented by its Chief Renewables Officer, Low Kian Min, while AWS was represented by the Managing Director of ASEAN, Jeff Johnson.
The exchange was witnessed by Tengku Muhammad Taufik, Chairman of Gentari and President & Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PETRONAS; Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari; Uwem Ukpong, Vice President of Global Services at AWS; and Ir Ts Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Senior Vice President of Projects, Technology and Health, Safety, Security & Environment at PETRONAS.
“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions – vital for Asia and the world’s move towards a low-carbon future. Through projects like the Karur wind development, we are not just adding renewable capacity – we are addressing real energy needs where it matters most. Together with AWS, we are focused on delivering impact through action and enabling the broader energy ecosystem to transition,” said Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari.
"Our collaboration with Gentari, a Malaysian clean energy leader expanding its regional impact, brings us a step closer towards that," said Jeff Johnson, Managing Director, ASEAN, AWS.
The collaboration between Gentari and AWS reflects a continuous goal to expand scalable, clean energy solutions across the region. As Gentari continues to grow its presence in renewable energy, hydrogen, and green mobility, the company remains focused on building partnerships that drive tangible impact.
