Cummins India – known for its diesel and gas gensets – has officially launched its Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The announcement comes under Cummins’ global “Destination Zero” strategy, which focuses on achieving carbon neutrality and expanding the company’s low-emission offerings.

BESS is emerging as a reliable and efficient technology to address the energy transition requirements of key industries such as manufacturing, data centres, commercial realty and mining, the company said, highlighting the importance of the technology.

The newly introduced BESS products are plug-and-play, transportable, and designed for AC output integration, enabling faster installation and greater adaptability across sectors. The firm claims that the systems comply with global safety standards, ensuring reliability in both grid-connected and off-grid scenarios.

Speaking at the launch, Shveta Arya, Managing Director of Cummins India, highlighted the urgency of energy transition in the country. “India’s energy mix is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by ambitious climate commitments, rapid adoption of renewables, and a national focus on clean and inclusive growth. Our Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a crucial enabler in this transition,” she said.

Arya further noted that the company sees this moment as an opportunity to “innovate with purpose” and support the country’s 2070 net-zero emissions target.

Scalable Energy for a Changing Landscape

The Cummins BESS units are available in two containerised variants – 10 ft and 20 ft options. They offer energy storage capacities ranging from 200 kWh to 2 MWh. The modular design allows for scalability, making the solution suitable for a wide variety of sectors, including manufacturing, commercial real estate, mining, and critical infrastructure.

At the core of the system is lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. Chosen for its long cycle life and thermal stability, LFP ensures lower risk of thermal runaway and reduced maintenance requirements. This translates into safer and more efficient energy storage for continuous and peak power needs.

Advanced Thermal Management

Another highlight is the integration of a liquid cooling system that maintains optimal battery temperature. This improves system performance and extends battery lifespan, offering long-term savings and efficiency for users operating in high-demand or extreme temperature environments.
