Global solar tracker and Balance of System (BoS) manufacturer GameChange Solar anticipates that the Indian solar tracker market will reach 30–35 GW by next year. The US-based company said adoption of solar trackers in India has increased due to rising demand for optimal energy yield and innovations tailored to India’s land-related challenges.

In an interaction with Saur Energy, Vikram Kenjale, Vice President of GameChange Solar India, spoke about the company’s journey in the country and its rapid expansion in the Indian solar market. Kenjale said the company entered India around 2021 as part of its “China+1” strategy and soon began to deepen its presence.

“The adoption of solar trackers in India has increased, especially over the last two years. This growth was also fueled by public-sector tenders that began specifying the use of trackers. The main growth drivers for the tracker business are improved efficiency and optimal power generation from solar projects,” Kenjale said.

Innovations For India

Speaking about challenges and innovations related to India’s terrain, he noted that much of the land used in solar parks is not rectangular, making customised solutions necessary—something GameChange Solar has focused on delivering for the Indian market.

“To address irregular land parcels common in India, the company introduced a two-row tracker system designed to reduce string size, cable length and project perimeter by up to 40%,” he said.

Kenjale added that GameChange Solar has already supplied around 15 GW of solar trackers to the Indian market and expects total demand to reach 30–35 GW by next year. He said that 60% of its customers are repeat clients.

“Based on a rough estimate for next year’s planning, the overall Indian tracker market is anticipated to be between 30 and 35 GW. GameChange Solar aims to maintain its position as the number one player in this segment,” he said.

Foray Into Transformer Business

GameChange Solar recently opened a transformer manufacturing unit in Taloja, near Mumbai, covering about 180,000 square feet and capable of producing two transformers annually. The plant will initially manufacture IDDT transformers, with plans to expand into heavy-duty units later. Although the business is focused primarily on the United States, the company said it is prepared to supply Indian customers as well.

Kenjale also said the rise in FDRE and RTC tenders has further fueled demand for trackers in India. “India remains a cost-sensitive market, with falling tracker prices and increased pressure from new FDRE (Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy) and RTC (Round-the-Clock) tenders, which also create demand for trackers due to their flatter generation curves,” he said.
