GAIL Expands Renewable Portfolio with 178.2 MW Maharashtra Wind Project

GAIL (India) Ltd has approved a ₹1,736.25 crore investment to set up a 178.2 MW wind power project in Maharashtra, strengthening its renewable portfolio and advancing its net zero carbon emission target for 2035.

GAIL Expands Renewable Portfolio with 178 MW

State-owned gas major GAIL (India) Ltd has approved an investment of ₹1,736.25 crore to develop a 178.2 MW wind power project in Maharashtra, marking a significant expansion of its renewable energy portfolio as the company advances towards its net zero targets.

The decision was cleared by the company’s board during a meeting held on Friday, according to a regulatory filing. The proposed wind project is scheduled for completion within 24 months from the date of contract award.

Building on 118 MW Wind Experience

The upcoming Maharashtra wind project will substantially augment GAIL’s existing renewable energy base. At present, the company operates 117.95 MW of wind power capacity across multiple states.

Its wind installations include 19.2 MW in Gujarat, 38.1 MW in Karnataka, and 60.65 MW in Tamil Nadu. In addition to wind assets, GAIL has 27 MW of solar power projects located in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

GAIL's Net Zero Roadmap by 2035

The wind power investment forms part of GAIL’s larger decarbonisation strategy. 

The company has set a target to achieve net zero emissions for Scope-1 and Scope-2 categories by 2035, and Scope-3 emissions by 2040.

According to the company’s stated roadmap, GAIL aims to scale up its renewable energy capacity to 3.4 GW by 2035 to support these climate commitments.

Beyond wind and solar, GAIL is also pursuing investments in emerging clean energy solutions such as green hydrogen and compressed biogas (CBG), complementing its shift towards a lower-carbon energy mix.

Beyond Natural Gas

While expanding its renewable footprint, GAIL continues to remain India’s largest natural gas transmission and marketing company. The firm operates an extensive natural gas pipeline network of around 18,001 kilometres across the country.

In addition to being the leading gas marketer, the company manages a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) portfolio and operates two petrochemical plants in Pata, Uttar Pradesh, and another in Assam.
