Maharashtra has spent ₹24,889 crore on renewable energy expenditure, accounting for a 9.8% share of the total expenditure in 2025–26. To increase the share of renewable energy substantially by 2030, it has become necessary to use renewable energy sources as an alternative to existing conventional sources for electricity generation.
Wind, solar, hydro, biomass, biogas, tidal waves, geothermal, etc., are clean and eco-friendly renewable energy sources. The Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) is the nodal agency for the promotion, propagation, and development of renewable energy sources in the state.
The share of renewable energy in the total installed capacity of the state for the year 2024–25 is 34.4%. The state ranks third in India after Rajasthan and Gujarat in terms of installed renewable energy capacity.
Maharashtra Pushes To Meet RPO & RECs
The Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) is the obligation mandated by MERC to purchase a specified minimum percentage of renewable energy out of the total consumption by obligated entities, including distribution companies, grid-connected captive generating plants, and open access consumers. Under the Renewable Energy Certification Mechanism, MEDA has accredited 371 renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 1,182.02 MW till 31 December 2025.
As per the amendment to the ‘RPO-REC Regulation-2019’ of MERC in February 2024, obligated entities had to purchase a minimum of 0.67% wind, 0.38% hydro, 1.50% solar, and 27.35% from other renewable energy sources during 2024–25, out of their total conventional consumption.

The state government has implemented several policies to promote renewable energy as part of its commitment to sustainable energy and reducing carbon emissions. Since inception, a total of 51.26 lakh agricultural pumps were energised in the state up to 31 March 2025. During 2025–26 (up to December), 2,74,614 agricultural pumps were energised. Various schemes are being implemented in the state regarding energisation in the agriculture sector and domestic electrification.

2024-25: Maharashtra Installs 14,113 MW Solar Plants in Govt Buildings
The state has also set up 5,176 solar power plants in government buildings, and with the renewable energy installed capacity increasing more than two-fold, from 6,978 MW in 2015-16 to 14,113 MW in 2024-25.
In this duration, the electricity consumption also rose to reach 65,459 MW industrial consumption, 37,211 MW domestic consumption, 38,428 MW agricultural consumption, and 16,302 MW commercial consumption. Additionally, Maharashtra saw the industrial consumption reach 511.7 MW, and commercial consumption also touched 127.4 MW.
The Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0, since its inception up to December 2025, has installed 2,887.8 MW of solar energy capacity since the scheme's inception in May 2023. Under the Mukhyamantri Baliraja Mofat Vij Yojana, the state provides free electricity to agricultural pump users up to 7.5 HP, benefiting 45,01,373 users since the scheme started in July 2024.
