Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a sustainable energy solutions provider and part of the Jameel Energy group, is advancing a battery energy storage pipeline exceeding 1,200 MW (5,000 MWh) across Spain. The portfolio is expected to reach Ready-to-Build status between 2026 and 2027.
The projects are currently at an advanced stage of development and are concentrated in four strategic regions: Extremadura, Andalusia, Catalonia, and Cantabria. The portfolio includes both hybrid projects combining solar photovoltaic generation with storage and stand-alone battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Extremadura Emerges as Core Hub
Extremadura represents the central pillar of FRV’s storage expansion strategy. The company is progressing hybridisation of photovoltaic assets, including the San Serván 220 complex, with 56 MW of solar paired with 225 MWh of storage, and the Solanilla project, with 18 MW of solar and 72 MWh of storage.
These hybrid projects are expected to reach Ready-to-Build status in the first quarter of 2026 following regulatory approval. The Carmonita cluster will form a major component of the region’s pipeline, integrating multiple projects including Carmonita Ministerio (320 MW / 1,360 MWh), Carmonita Sur (80 MW / 400 MWh), Carmonita Norte (91 MW / 455 MWh), and Carmonita IV (40 MW / 200 MWh).
Alongside these developments, the planned hybridisation of San Serván 400, adding 111 MW and 495 MWh, brings the total hybrid capacity in Extremadura to approximately 652 MW and 3,492 MWh, highlighting the region’s favourable conditions for large-scale clean energy deployment.
Regional Expansion Across Spain
In Andalusia, FRV plans to hybridise its Alcores projects in Seville, incorporating 57 MW and 285 MWh of battery storage.
Catalonia represents another major focus area, where FRV is planning 334 MW and 1,336 MWh across six battery storage facilities located across the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona. These projects will contribute to grid stability in regions with high levels of renewable energy penetration.
In Cantabria, the Santander BESS Camarreal project will add a 50 MW / 200 MWh storage system in the municipality of Camargo. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026.
Hybridisation Strategy Drives Growth
FRV’s pipeline put a strong emphasis on hybridisation, particularly the integration of storage with existing photovoltaic plants.
With more than 5 GWh of battery storage capacity under development, FRV is positioning itself as a key participant in Spain’s utility-scale storage market. The pipeline reflects broader market trends in Europe, where storage is increasingly viewed as essential infrastructure for managing renewable variability and strengthening grid resilience.
