Fluence Energy has announced its selection by AGL to deliver the 500 MW / 2000 MWh Tomago Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Newcastle, New South Wales. This will be one of the largest energy storage systems by capacity in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) and represents Fluence’s biggest project globally to date.
With the Tomago BESS, Fluence has now surpassed 5 GWh of storage projects deployed or under development in Australia, reaffirming its position as a key enabler of the country’s clean energy future.
Expanding a Strategic Partnership With AGL
The Tomago BESS is the third large-scale project Fluence is delivering for AGL. The collaboration began with the successful commissioning of the 50 MWh Broken Hill BESS and continued with the ongoing construction of the 1000 MWh Liddell BESS.
AGL’s Chief Operating Officer, Markus Brokhof, noted that Fluence has become a trusted provider in AGL’s growing energy storage portfolio.
“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Fluence as the battery energy storage provider for the Tomago Battery. This project builds on the work we have done together for AGL’s Broken Hill and Liddell batteries,” said Brokhof.
Powered by Gridstack Pro
The Tomago BESS will be built using Fluence’s Gridstack Pro, a next-generation utility-scale energy storage product designed for flexible deployment and enhanced performance, the company notes.
The system will provide grid-forming capabilities, which are essential for stabilising the grid as more renewable sources come online. Fluence has been contracted not only to construct the facility but also to deliver ongoing operations and maintenance services, ensuring long-term system performance and reliability.
Supporting Australia's Grid of the Future
Fluence has four energy storage systems already operational in Australia, two more nearing completion, and several additional projects under development.
Jan Teichmann, SVP & President, APAC at Fluence, said the Tomago project is a strong signal of the company’s commitment to supporting Australia’s renewable energy goals.
Australia remains one of the most important BESS markets globally, experiencing significant growth as the country accelerates its transition to renewable energy sources,” said Teichmann.
As Australia accelerates its transition to renewables, large-scale battery systems like the Tomago BESS are becoming vital for balancing intermittent energy sources and ensuring grid reliability.
Jason Beer, General Manager of Fluence Australia, highlighted that this project demonstrates the full breadth of Fluence’s deployment expertise and the strength of its product suite tailored to Australian conditions.
