German engineering company Flender has inaugurated a new advanced testing facility near Chennai, marking a significant milestone for India’s wind energy sector.

The facility houses the country’s largest test rig designed to validate gearboxes for 13.5 MW-class wind turbines, among the most powerful wind turbines currently deployed globally.

The infrastructure is expected to benefit India’s manufacturing ecosystem for both offshore wind and onshore wind technologies.

More Power, Lesser Space

As turbine sizes increase globally, the wind industry is transitioning from mid-scale turbines to large, high-efficiency machines capable of generating more power with fewer installations.

By expanding its testing capability from 6 MW to 13.5 MW, Flender aims to support the development of next-generation “mega-turbines.” These larger turbines are considered essential for lowering the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) in large-scale wind projects.

Technical Infrastructure and Global Collaboration

Wind turbine gearboxes play a critical role in power generation. They convert the slow rotational movement of turbine blades into the high-speed rotation required by electrical generators.

The newly commissioned test rig is designed to simulate extreme mechanical loads and operating conditions, allowing manufacturers to validate gearbox durability before field deployment.

About the Facility

The design and development of the facility was commenced in January 2025 at Flender’s Voerde site in Germany.

The core components, such as motors and converters, were manufactured in China, while transformers, cooling systems, and structural steel were sourced from Indian suppliers.

The facility was completed within 13 months, progressing from blueprint to operational status by early 2026.

Strengthening India’s Wind Energy Ecosystem

The new testing infrastructure arrives as India’s wind power sector continues to expand. The country currently has approximately 54 GW of installed wind capacity, with another 30 GW under development.

On July 29, 2025, renewable energy sources met a record 51.5 percent of India’s total power demand, equivalent to 203 GW, in a single day.

Notably, Wind energy currently accounts for approximately 5 percent of India’s total electricity generation, producing 3.35 billion units in FY 2024–25.
