The inaugural bunkering took place at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry terminal in Dalian, where China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers Co. Ltd. fueled a 5,500 HP ammonia-powered port vessel with green ammonia produced at Envision's large-scale hydrogen-ammonia facility in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia.

The operation marks the completion of a full green ammonia value chain—from production and transport to fuelling and vessel operation—paving the way for cleaner alternatives in maritime fuel.

“This successful bunkering demonstrates how net-zero fuels can scale into hard-to-abate sectors like maritime shipping,” said Frank Yu, Senior Vice President at Envision Energy.

The ammonia fuel used was produced at Envision’s Chifeng Green Hydrogen-Ammonia Project, billed as the world’s largest and most cost-effective facility of its kind. The plant integrates wind and solar power with hydrogen and ammonia production technologies and has received ISCC Plus and Bureau Veritas certifications verifying its greenhouse gas footprint and renewable status.

The tugboat receiving the fuel features a dual-fuel engine and a dedicated ammonia fuel system, achieving a reported ammonia substitution rate of up to 91%, significantly cutting emissions compared to conventional fuels. The vessel has been classified as an “Ammonia Fuel Tug” by the China Classification Society.

With the addition of green ammonia, Dalian Port becomes the first in the world to offer a full range of clean marine fuels, including biofuel, green methanol, LNG, and green ammonia.

The development represents a significant step in building a viable green fuel supply chain for international maritime trade and underscores China’s push to lead in clean shipping technologies.
