ENGIE North America has announced a series of new Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Meta, expanding their renewable energy collaboration to more than 1.3 GW across four projects in Texas. This milestone marks one of the largest corporate renewable energy partnerships in the state.
Swenson Ranch Solar Project
The newly announced 600 MW Swenson Ranch Solar project in Stonewall County, southeast of Lubbock, will be the centrepiece of this expansion.
Once operational in 2027, the project will supply 100 percent of its output to Meta to support the company’s data centre operations across the United States. Swenson Ranch will also become ENGIE’s largest individual asset within its 11 GW portfolio of operating and under-construction solar, wind, and battery storage projects in North America.
"We are excited to continue the expansion of our relationship with Meta," said Dave Carroll, CEO and Chief Renewables Officer, ENGIE North America. "Our objective is to bring reliable, cost competitive power to the grid as rapidly as possible, and projects like Swenson demonstrate the importance of solar to meet the timely needs of our customers."
"We are thrilled to bring an additional 600MW of solar energy to the grid, and expand our partnership with ENGIE to 1.3 GW," said Urvi Parekh, Head of Global Energy at Meta. "Our collaboration with ENGIE enables us to continue matching 100 percent of our electricity use with clean and renewable energy to support our data center operations."
Renewables for Data Centres
The surge in artificial intelligence and cloud-based services is fueling the global expansion of data centres, which already consume more than 400 TWh annually. This is about 1.5 percent of total global electricity use. The IEA projects it to double to 945 TWh by 2030 and exceed 1,200 TWh by 2035.
Meta is increasingly pushing for renewable energy to power its operations. Enbridge Inc. is also investing 600 MW Clear Fork solar project in Texas, which is expected to begin operations in the summer of 2027. Once operational, the solar farm will supply 100 percent of its renewable power to Meta under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).
