Egypt, Sunrev to Build $200 Million Solar Manufacturing Hub in SCZone

In a strategic move to boost local renewable energy manufacturing, Egypt has signed a landmark agreement with China’s Sunrev Solar to establish a fully integrated industrial complex for solar energy supplies in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone, part of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone).

Major Step Toward Solar Supply Chain Localisation

The USD 200 million investment will be entirely financed and developed by Sunrev Solar, making it one of the largest industrial investments in the renewable energy sector within the SCZone to date. Spanning 200,000 square metres, the complex will be built in two distinct phases.

The first phase, valued at USD 90 million, will see the development of integrated manufacturing units with an annual production capacity of 2 GW each for solar cells and solar modules. The second phase, with an investment of USD 110 million, will focus on domesticating key upstream materials including silicon ingots and wafers, which are critical components in the solar manufacturing value chain.

Strategic Investment Backed by Government Support

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly underlined the significance of the SCZone in drawing foreign direct investment, especially in high-priority sectors like renewable energy. He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to localising the production of clean energy components through incentives and strategic policy backing.

Chairman of the SCZone, Waleid Gamal El-Dien, noted that the project is expected to create over 1,800 direct jobs across both phases. He also highlighted its potential to enhance Egypt’s solar exports, with projected annual revenue reaching up to USD 300 million.

Timeline and Operational Outlook

The foundation stone for the project will be laid on June 19. According to the current schedule, the first phase is expected to become operational in the first half of 2026.

This project marks a significant step in Egypt’s energy transition journey and positions the SCZone as a key hub for solar manufacturing in the region. The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) is a 455km zone that adopts an investor-friendly business environment which is expected to be a cornerstone for national development plans.

By February 2025, the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone),  an autonomous body with executive and regulative powers, secured 251 projects across its industrial zones and ports over the past 30 months, attracting a total investment of over USD 8 billion.
