EDF Plans ₹10,217 Crore Investment in 2,100 MW Pumped Storage Project in Maharashtra

With this, a total of 55 Pumped Storage Projects have now been initiated in Maharashtra, aiming to generate 78,215 MW of clean energy capacity. This will attract an estimated investment of ₹4.17 lakh crore.

Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, announced that the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a large pumped storage project in the state.

According to details shared by Fadnavis on social media, the MoU was signed between the state’s Water Resources Department and Chambery Power Private Limited, a group company of EDF Power Solutions India. The agreement aims to develop the 2,100 MW Pimpalpada–Savale Pumped Storage Project with a proposed investment of ₹10,217 crore.

The project will be located across the Pune district and Raigad district and is expected to generate around 2,500 employment opportunities.

With this development, the number of pumped storage projects initiated in Maharashtra has reached 55, with a combined planned capacity of 78,215 MW. These projects are expected to attract investments of approximately ₹4.17 lakh crore and create employment opportunities for nearly 1.28 lakh people, according to the state government.

The MoU exchange took place in the presence of Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Girish Mahajan, along with Guirec Servan, CEO of EDF Power Solutions India, and other officials.

EDF’s Previous Collaborations in India

The French energy company EDF has previously collaborated with India on several energy projects, including a partnership between NTPC Limited and EDF to form a 50:50 partnership, subject to the requisite approval from the Government of India. EDF brings extensive experience in nuclear as well as hydro projects, supporting both public sector undertakings (PSUs).

EDF has also previously won a Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) tender through RIH Renewables (EDF Renewables), securing a 40 MW wind project at a tariff of Rs 3.59 per kWh under Phase VIII of the 200 MW wind energy project in Gujarat.
