Delhi is set to host four standalone utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across South and West Delhi, adding 55.5 MW / 111 MWh of storage capacity. The projects also include the development of underground cabling in Chandni Chowk and the laying of the foundation stone for a 66/11 kV, 63 MVA GIS indoor grid substation at Mandoli.

Foundation stones were laid for BSES Yamuna Power Limited’s 66/11 kV GIS grid substation in Mandoli and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited’s utility-scale battery energy storage projects in Shivalik, Dwarka, and Goyala Khurd. These projects aim to improve load management and enhance grid stability, ensuring a more reliable power supply for consumers.

The ceremony was attended by Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood, Member of Parliament Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, and Councillor Suman Kumar Gupta, along with other local representatives.

Separately, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a project to underground overhead power lines in Chandni Chowk, aimed at improving safety and reducing visual clutter in the historic area. The event was attended by MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Councillor Suman Kumar Gupta, and other local leaders.

Previous BESS Projects in Delhi

Large utility-scale BESS tenders have become increasingly common in India, led by central agencies such as SECI and NTPC, as well as state utilities including GUVNL, SJVN, and Bihar Power. In Delhi, the city added its first BESS project last year, developed by AmpereHour Energy in partnership with IndiGrid through their consortium, Kilokari BESS.

The project was commissioned in collaboration with BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL). This deployment represents one of the first regulatory-approved BESS projects in India, marking a significant step toward urban grid modernization and reliable clean energy delivery.

Other states are also pursuing large-scale BESS deployments. Tata Power Solar Systems Limited (TPSSL), a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), commissioned a 100 MW solar PV project coupled with a 120 MWh utility-scale BESS at Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh.

Additionally, KPI Green Energy’s subsidiary, Sun Drops Energia Private Limited, received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) to develop standalone BESS projects. Under the award, Sun Drops Energia will develop projects totaling 445 MW / 890 MWh at multiple locations across Gujarat. These projects will be implemented under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model and will be fully owned by the company.
