CEA Seeks Data On Domestic Manufacturing Capacity Of Grid-Forming Inverters Photograph: (Archive)
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has now asked the domestic manufacturers of grid-forming (GFM) inverters to submit details of their production capacity, signalling the government’s growing focus on strengthening grid stability as renewable energy penetration rises. The new move is set to boost the abailability of data on the rising technology and its executions in Indian renewable energy projects.
In a letter issued by the Energy Storage System (ESS) Division of the Ministry of Power, the CEA said the “increasing share of Renewable Energy, such as Solar and Wind, necessitate the installation of Grid Forming (GFM) Inverters to make the electricity grid stable and reliable.”
Seeking Estimates of GFM
The authority said it is seeking estimates of India’s manufacturing capacity for GFM inverters “for future planning as well as other policy, regulatory and technical interventions.”
Manufacturers have been invited to share their production capacity and related details in a prescribed format by February 10, 2026 via email to the CEA.
The request also seeks information on the “tentative cost of GFM and GFL inverters made by the company in India,” covering both central and string inverter configurations across capacities ranging from 10 kW and 100 kW to 1 MW and above.
Rising New Biz
Grid-forming inverters are emerging as a critical technology for modern power systems with high renewable penetration. Unlike conventional grid-following (GFL) inverters, which rely on an existing grid signal, GFM inverters can independently establish voltage and frequency, enabling stable operation in grids with large shares of solar, wind and battery energy storage.
India has set ambitious targets to expand renewable energy capacity and deploy large-scale battery energy storage systems. The CEA’s move is widely seen as an early step toward assessing domestic supply readiness and shaping policy support for local manufacturing of advanced inverter technologies.
The letter was issued with the approval of the Chairperson of the CEA and has been circulated to all grid-forming inverter manufacturers in the country.
