BPCL Awards 100 MW Wind Farm Contracts To Suzlon, Integrum

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), has awarded contracts for developing 100 MW Windfarm Projects—50 MW each in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

BPCL issued the  Letter of Award (LOA) to Suzlon Energy Limited for the 50 MW wind project in Madhya Pradesh and to Integrum Energy Infrastructure Limited for the 50 MW project in Maharashtra. These projects are expected to be completed and commissioned within two years.

The wind farms will cater to the captive power requirements of BPCL’s Mumbai Refinery (Maharashtra) and Bina Refinery (Madhya Pradesh), thereby substituting conventional fossil-based energy sources with clean, renewable wind energy.

This initiative marks a crucial milestone in BPCL’s Renewable Energy roadmap, which envisions an ambitious 10 GW portfolio by 2040. These efforts align with BPCL’s broader target of becoming a Net Zero energy company in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040.

India’s key oil marketing and infrastructure firms, namely Indian Oil Limited, HPCL,Oil India, ONGC, GAIL etc have all ramped up their efforts to add renewable energy, to support the national targets as well as reduce their own net emissions. Considering the nature of their business, even reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040 or earlier is a worthwhile target for these firms.

Thus, while Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from sources controlled or owned by an organization, such as burning fuel in vehicles or boilers, Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions associated with purchased electricity, steam, heat, or cooling. However, Scope 3 emissions remain an insurmountable obstacle for these firms, as those include the emissions from the products sold by them, ie, the fuel that runs India’s transportation sector and more.

A Fortune Global 500 Company, Bharat Petroleum, is the second largest Indian Oil Marketing Company and one of the integrated energy companies in India engaged in refining crude oil and marketing petroleum products, with a presence in the upstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry.

Bharat Petroleum’s Refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, and Bina have a combined refining capacity of around 35.3 MMTPA. Its marketing infrastructure includes a network of installations, depots, fuel stations, aviation service stations, and LPG distributors. Its distribution network comprises over 23,500+ Fuel Stations, over 6,200+ LPG distributorships, 500+ Lubes distributorships, 80 POL storage locations, 54 LPG Bottling Plants, 79 Aviation Service Stations, 5 Lube blending plants, and 5 cross-country pipelines.
