India’s BatX Energies and Germany’s Rocklink GmbH have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the country’s first rare earth magnet recycling and refining ecosystem, the companies announced Friday.

The Indo-German partnership combines BatX’s execution capabilities with Rocklink’s technical and market expertise in rare earth and specialty metal recycling. The agreement follows growing cooperation under the EU–India Trade and Technology Council (TTC), which promotes joint efforts in critical minerals and clean technology development.

BatX, which co-leads EU TTC working groups on critical minerals and the circular economy, will work with Rocklink India to scale up rare earth magnet recycling infrastructure. The companies had earlier launched India’s first lithium-ion battery and permanent magnet recycling cluster in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Under the new initiative, Rocklink’s proprietary Magcycle™ reverse logistics system will be deployed to collect end-of-life magnets such as NdFeB, SmCo, and AlNiCo from motors, electronics, and industrial waste. The firms will also jointly develop advanced solvent extraction (SX) technologies to isolate rare earth elements, including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, terbium, gadolinium, and holmium.

The collaboration aims to set up India’s first fully integrated rare earth refining facility, designed to comply with zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) and export standards. Patents will be co-developed and filed in India and Europe, creating a joint intellectual property portfolio.

“This partnership marks a defining moment in India’s journey toward rare earth self-reliance,” said Utkarsh Singh, CEO of BatX Energies. “We’re proud to lead this initiative alongside Rocklink and to advance the EU TTC vision for circular and transparent mineral supply chains.”

Leonard Ansorge, director at Rocklink GmbH, said the alliance would support India’s goal of building a viable rare earth magnet supply chain. “Our collaboration with BatX combines our refining expertise with their innovative on-ground execution to deliver results in short development cycles,” he said.

A pilot facility is expected to begin operations within 12 months, with commercial-scale production to follow in 24 months. The project is intended to support both India’s domestic clean energy goals and Europe’s efforts to diversify rare earth sourcing.
