Astronergy to Invest USD 700 Million in Second Solar Module Plant in Turkey

China-based solar manufacturer Astronergy, a subsidiary of the Chint Group, is setting its sights on its second solar module manufacturing facility in Turkey, with an investment of USD 700 million. The plant will be located in the western city of Balıkesir, where the company has already secured land in the organised industrial zone.

Construction will break ground by the end of 2025. In the initial phase, the factory will focus on manufacturing photovoltaic wafers and cells, targeting an annual production capacity of 3 GW.

Production Targets and Export Focus

By 2028, the plant is expected to be running at full clip, expanding its capacity to 5 GW per year. At that stage, the facility will also begin producing finished solar modules.

Astronergy aims to export 80 percent of the output from this new facility, primarily to the United States and Southern Europe. The plant will employ the company’s high-efficiency TOPCon 4.0 cell technology to meet global standards.

Turkey’s Growing Renewable Manufacturing Base

The move comes as Turkey strengthens its position as a key hub for renewable energy equipment manufacturing. The country’s clean energy sector is benefiting from government auctions with high domestic content requirements and production-linked incentives.

Astronergy already operates a 1 GW solar module plant in Adana, and its expansion aligns with Turkey’s broader push to attract foreign investment in high-tech and green industries. The company will also receive support under the government’s HIT-30 programme, which promotes high-technology manufacturing projects.

Renewable Energy in Turkey: A Growing Landscape

As of early 2025, Turkey hosted 75 solar panel manufacturers with a combined annual capacity of 44.5 GW. However, only three of these firms produced solar cells, with a total annual capacity of 6.1 GW.

In addition to solar, Turkey is also actively expanding its capabilities in wind and geothermal energy. The government has set an ambitious renewable energy target of 120 GW in solar and wind capacity by 2035. Currently, the country’s installed solar capacity stands at around 23 GW, indicating significant room for growth and investment.
