The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a major power infrastructure expansion plan aimed at addressing the state’s rapidly increasing electricity demand.
Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar informed the State Assembly on Thursday that nearly ₹6,000 crore will be invested to establish 200 new power substations in high-load regions across the state.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the electricity distribution network and ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply for consumers.
According to the minister, electricity consumption has been steadily increasing in Andhra Pradesh over the past several years. Demand has surged across multiple sectors, including industry, commercial establishments, households, and agriculture.
To keep pace with this growth and prevent potential supply disruptions, the government has begun implementing proactive measures to enhance the state’s power infrastructure.
New Substations in High-Load Areas
As part of the plan, authorities have identified regions experiencing high electricity load and prepared proposals to establish new substations in those locations. These facilities are expected to improve the efficiency of the power distribution network by reducing transmission losses and ensuring consistent electricity delivery.
The government is also approving the construction of several 33/11 kV substations across the state wherever required. These substations will play a critical role in distributing electricity to local networks and managing rising demand at the community level.
New 220 kV Substations in Vizianagaram
In addition to the broader expansion plan, two new 220 kV substations are currently being developed in the Vizianagaram district at an estimated cost of ₹46 crore. These facilities are expected to enhance grid stability in the region and help accommodate future electricity demand.
Existing Power Infrastructure in the State
Data from the Andhra Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation (APTRANSCO) indicates that the state currently operates a substantial transmission network. This includes 18 substations with 400 kV capacity, 113 substations of 220 kV, and 244 substations of 132 kV, together accounting for around 372 Extra High Tension (EHT) substations.
In addition, hundreds of 33/11 kV substations distribute electricity directly to towns and villages. Overall, Andhra Pradesh is estimated to have more than 900 substations across different voltage levels.
With the planned addition of 200 new substations, the state government aims to further strengthen and modernise its power infrastructure.
