Andhra Pradesh is the biggest beneficiary of Union government’s energy efficiency scheme for public lighting through LEDs, data shared by the New and Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh before the Parliament revealed. The ministry in his written response before the Lower House of the Parliament (Lok Sabha) submitted state-wise details of coverage under the scheme. This energy efficient lighting exercise was undertaken through the Ujala scheme of the government.

The data mentions that approximately 1.30 crore LED streetlights have been successfully installed nationwide by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a constituent body of the Ministry of Power. The reply gave a breakdown of the LED streetlights’ installation status across states and union territories.

The data revealed notable achievements. Leading in installations are Andhra Pradesh (with 29,47,706 LED streetlights), Telangana (16,82,878), Maharashtra (11,05,231), and Rajasthan (10,73,238). This aligns with the ongoing trend, maintaining Andhra Pradesh’s position at the forefront, as recently revealed in December.

However, a closer look at the data from August unveils variations, particularly in states like Telangana, securing the second-highest installation with 16,55,460 LED streetlights. Following closely are Uttar Pradesh (12,90,949 LED streetlights), Maharashtra (11,03,306), and Rajasthan (10,72,033). In aggregate, the Ujala initiative has successfully expanded energy access in these regions while concurrently reducing electricity bills.

This accomplishment reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable and efficient energy solutions under the Street Lighting National Programme. The data not only signifies progress but also underscores the program’s adaptability, responding to evolving trends and needs in different regions. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Joint Venture of Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Power, has the requisite capacity to support Local Self Governments in achieving hundred per cent LED coverage of streetlights in the country, subject to regular payment of dues by the respective Local Self Governments.

The Ministry of Power has been working in many states to boost energy efficient streetlights and also boosting solar streetlights to decarbonise the electricity sector.
