AIKO Energy Targets Indian Market With ABC Solar Cell Technology Photograph: (AIKO Energy)
AIKO Energy is looking to expand its presence in India with its advanced ABC (All Back Contact) solar cell technology, as the company sees growing demand for higher-efficiency solar solutions in the country.
Speaking to Saur Energy on the sidelines of Intersolar India in Gandhinagar, Jim Kent, Manager (Overseas Market) at AIKO Energy said the company plans to introduce its latest technology to the Indian market while exploring collaboration with domestic manufacturers.
AIKO, which has been manufacturing solar cells for about 16 years and began producing modules three years ago, currently has around 65 GW of manufacturing capacity in China. The company has also supplied solar cells to several Indian module manufacturers in the past.
Higher Efficienct Technology
Kent said AIKO is now focusing on promoting its ABC cell technology, which shifts all electrical contacts to the rear of the cell, allowing the front surface to capture more sunlight. This design improves performance and efficiency compared with conventional architectures. According to the company, its ABC cells can achieve around 27.5% efficiency, while modules built using the technology can reach about 25.2% efficiency.
The company believes the technology has strong potential in India as developers increasingly seek higher power output from solar installations. AIKO expects ABC products to begin entering the Indian market this year, with adoption likely to grow further in the coming years. Given India’s regulatory environment for imported solar equipment, Kent said the company is looking at working with local partners and supporting domestic manufacturing in line with government policies.
Seeking Local Partnership
“We will follow Indian government regulations and gradually introduce the technology in the market, including cooperation with local manufacturers,” he said. When asked if a mono-PERC or TOPCon module line could be adapted for ABC technology, he said that it could be done with limited additional investment, which could make adoption easier for manufacturers.
Globally, AIKO said interest in ABC technology is rising. In China, the technology accounted for roughly 10% of the market last year, a share that could increase significantly as manufacturers transition from existing technologies such as TOPCon, he said.
Beyond China, the company sees growing demand in Europe, particularly for rooftop installations where the technology’s higher efficiency and uniform appearance are attractive.
AIKO said it intends to continue bringing its latest solar technologies to India as the country expands its solar capacity and seeks more efficient modules for utility-scale and rooftop projects.
