Africa: Ghana to Build 1 GWp Solar Park by 2032, Led by Solar for Industries
Ghana is set to develop a 1 GWp (1,000 MWp) solar farm by 2032. President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the country’s readiness to lead Africa’s new wave of industrial transformation, powered by clean and sustainable energy.
The president mentioned that the project, led by LMI Holdings' subsidiary Solar for Industries Limited (SFI), will deliver 200 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar energy in its first phase, representing about 2% of Ghana’s total power supply.
He announced this during the sod-cutting ceremony, which marked the official start of construction of the solar park at Agortor in the Dawa Industrial Enclave, Greater Accra Region.
According to him, the initial 100 MWp capacity is expected to be completed by December 2026, with the second phase following nine months later. The project is projected to expand to 1,000 MWp by 2032, making it the largest private utility-scale solar facility in sub-Saharan Africa outside South Africa.
About The Project
John Dramani Mahama describes the initiative as a significant step towards Ghana’s clean industrial revolution. He added that the project complements national environmental efforts, including the Blue Water Guards, Tree for Life Reforestation Programme, and the Clean Ghana Campaign.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram, described the day as “a great one in the annals of the nation,” symbolizing light and progress.
Samuel Nartey George reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the country’s digital and industrial growth through sustainable energy and technology-driven innovation.
