2023 Proved Brightest For Wind Power Generation In India: Govt EU Adds 17 GW New Wind Energy In 2023, Fails To Meet 30 GW Target

Union Minister R.K Singh in a written reply before the parliament shared data on the contribution of wind energy in the total energy mix in the last three years. The data revealed an incremental growth in the wind generation capacity to the overall renewable energy. The data said that 2023 proved fruitful for the wind sector with more share of renewable power generation with wind energy.

The data on the share of wind energy generation in 2021-22 revealed that it stood at 4.6% of the total energy generation in India. It saw a dip in 2022-2023 to 4.4% and rose again in  2023-2024 to 5.8% (upto October).

The data also showcased an incremental growth in contribution of wind energy in total share of energy generation. It rose from 21.6% in 2021-2022, 22.5% in 2022-2023 and 23.3% in 2023-24 (Up to Oct 2023). It also witnessed growth in wind energy capacity contributing to the rise to the total generation (Billion Units) i.e., from (1491.7) in 2021-22, (1624.3) in 2022-23 to (1047.0) in 2023-24 (Up to Oct 2023).

The minister said that the Indian government has undertaken several major initiatives to enhance the generation of renewable energy in the country, which inter alia included–

i. Waiver of Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for inter-State sale of solar and wind power for projects to be commissioned by 30th June 2025 and graded ISTS charges thereafter,
ii. Declaration of trajectory for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) up to the year 2030,
iii. Launch of new schemes and programs, including Development of Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects Scheme, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan Yojana (PM-KUSUM), Grid Connected Solar Rooftop Programme, CPSU Scheme Phase-II (Government Producer Scheme), Production Linked Incentive Scheme under ‘National Programme on High Efficiency Solar PV Modules, National Bioenergy Programme, Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development (RE-RTD) Programme, Schemes for incentives on electrolyser manufacturing and Green Hydrogen production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
iv. Setting up of Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Parks to provide land and transmission to RE developers on a plug and play basis,
v. Laying of new transmission lines and creating new sub-station capacity for evacuation of renewable power,
vi. Setting up of Project Development Cell for attracting and facilitating investments,
vii. Standard Bidding Guidelines for tariff based competitive bidding process for procurement of Power from Grid Connected Solar PV and Wind Projects,
viii. Government has issued orders that power shall be dispatched against Letter of Credit (LC) or advance payment to ensure timely payment by distribution licensees to RE generators,
ix. Notification of Promoting Renewable Energy through Green Energy Open Access Rules 2022,
x. Notification of Late Payment Surcharge and related matters Rules 2022.
xi. Notification of Electricity Amendment Rules 2022 with provision of Uniform Renewable Energy Tariff for Central Pool.
xii. Launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission with the objective to make India a hub for Green Hydrogen production and exports.
