2 MW Solar Plant Sees Mizoram Enter India’s Solar Map

With the commissioning of what is its 1st solar power plant, a 2 MW capacity system, Mizoram has entered its place on India’s solar power map.

With the commissioning of what is its first solar power plant, a 2 MW capacity system, Mizoram has recently earned its place on India’s solar power map. Mizoram Power Minister R. Lalzirliana inaugurated the state’s first solar power plant at Tlungvel in Aizawl district.

In his address on the occasion, the minister said that with the commissioning of the 2 MW solar power plants, Mizoram has made its entry onto the solar map of the country and it was a proud moment for the state.

“Besides solar energy, the hydroelectric potential of the state must be harnessed to produce more power so that the vision of the government with respect to self-sufficiency in power and energy can become a reality,” he said.

Deputy Speaker and local MLA Lalrinawma praised the local community for providing land for the solar power plant and facilitating its construction.

The state government-funded solar plant, built at a cost of Rs 14 crore,  the construction of which was started in August 2018, is spread over five acres of land and has 5,340 solar modules. The plant is expected to generate 3 million units annually. Power Department officials said that a 20 MW solar power plant is currently under construction at Vankal in Khawzawl district in southern Mizoram.

In May, we had reported that the Power & Electricity Department of Mizoram (PEDM) had issued a Notice Inviting Tenders (NIT) for the sale of its surplus renewable power (non-solar) for the period from July 22, 2020, to December 31, 2020.

The power department was seeking to sell the power through a trader having a valid inter-state trading license issued by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), and having past experience of consultancy/trading service on behalf of state power utilities to enable PEDM for the sale of its surplus renewable power.
