The 132 kV transmission line and the 100 MVA, 33/132 kV capacity transformer at the Kajra Solar Power Plant, located in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district, have been successfully energised, announced Manoj Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Energy Department and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL).
Singh stated that the work was completed under the continuous and intensive monitoring of the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) and the Bihar State Power Transmission Company Limited (BSPTCL).
A new transmission line has been constructed to facilitate power transmission from the Kajra Solar Power Plant. The line has been energised from the Grid Sub-station Haveli Kharagpur and the Grid Sub-station Lakhisarai. Alongside this, the 100-megawatt, 33/132 kV capacity transformer installed at Kajra Solar Power Plant has also been energised.
One of the Country’s Largest Battery Storage Solar Projects
According to Manoj Kumar Singh, this achievement is a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to promote solar energy and strengthen Bihar’s electricity infrastructure.
The Secretary highlighted that the solar power plant will provide uninterrupted electricity during the day, while its battery energy storage system (BESS) will ensure 4 to 5 hours of power supply during peak demand periods.
A senior official from Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) informed that the Kajra Solar Power Plant is among India’s largest battery storage-based solar energy projects. The official said its commencement would give new impetus to green energy production in the state.
Capacity and Investment Details
Under the first phase of the Kajra project, a 185-megawatt solar power plant with a 254 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system has been constructed at an estimated cost of INR 1,810 crore.
The second phase involves the construction of a 116-megawatt solar power plant integrated with a 241 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS), which is being developed at an estimated cost of INR 1,055 crore. The target for completion of this phase is January 2027.
Upon full completion, the Kajra Solar Power Plant will have a total solar generation capacity of 301 megawatts and a battery storage capacity of 495 megawatt-hours, significantly strengthening Bihar’s renewable power capabilities.
