Global Wind Power Hits 117 GW In 2024, Driven By China & India: GWEC

The global wind industry added 117 GW of new capacity in 2024, marking its strongest year to date, according to new findings. The additions brought total installed wind power capacity worldwide to 1,136 GW—an 11% increase over 2023.

Onshore wind led the surge, with 109 GW connected to the grid, surpassing the 100 GW milestone for the second year in a row and setting a new annual record. Offshore wind, however, declined. Just 8 GW of capacity was commissioned in 2024, down 26% from the previous year and the lowest since 2021.

The study identified China, the United States, Germany, India, and Brazil as the top five countries for new wind installations in 2024. It also noted that, compared to 2023, Germany and India each moved up one position, while Brazil slipped to fifth place. These five nations accounted for 81% of global additions—1 percentage point more than the previous year.
