India’s BESS Market To Accelerate with 12,500 MW in Tenders

India’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sector is witnessing rapid growth, with approximately 12,500 megawatts (MW) of capacity under tender and an additional 3,300 MW in the pipeline or bid out, according to Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Prasad was speaking at the India Energy Storage Week, organised by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) in the capital.

“We have roughly 3,300 MW in the pipeline, which translates to about 8,500 megawatt-hour (MWh) capacity expected in the next two years. Another 12,500 MW, or roughly 42,000 MWh, is currently in the tender stage,” Prasad said.

Despite the acceleration, India’s current operational BESS capacity remains limited at just 205 MW, equivalent to approximately 506 MWh. Prasad highlighted the urgent need to scale up storage capacity to support the country’s growing renewable energy deployment.

In parallel, the government is also focusing on expanding hydro-based storage. Prasad stated that India aims to add 3,000 MW of hydro pumped storage project (PSP) capacity this year. Over the next five to six years, the target is to grow hydro PSP capacity from the existing 5 gigawatts (GW) to over 50 GW.

Growth in Battery Storage Installations

India has added over 341 MWh of new battery energy storage capacity in 2024 a more than sixfold increase from 51 MWh added in 2023. The country’s cumulative battery storage capacity stood at 442 MWh as of December 2024.

Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat have led the sector in cumulative installed energy storage capacity, contributing 36 percent, 27 percent, and 17 percent, respectively.

Notably, the government agencies issued energy storage tenders totaling nearly 27 GW in 2024 and auctioned approximately 17 GW of projects, including both standalone and hybrid systems paired with renewable energy.

At the India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that India is targeting a BESS capacity of 74 GW by 2031-32.
