Job Description

The Principal Hardware Engineer will perform the role of electrical and electronic hardware system architect that involves design and development of  electrical and electronic circuits, component selection, sensor selection, actuator selection, drive/amplifier selection, battery sizing, power budgeting and hardware cost estimations for Guided Vehicles (AGVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles/Vessels (ROVs), Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and similar Electro-mechanical systems. He/she will be additionally responsible for the selection of PLCs, Micro-controllers and other computational as well as communication platforms, electronic hardware testing and system integration for Oceaneering’s next generation systems.

Duties & Responsibilities:-

Functions:-

ESSENTIAL:-

  • Architect circuits and wiring harness of robotic systems by selection of appropriate technology and components
  • Lead and conduct advanced research for cost reduction of electronic hardware and better robotic system endurance, mobility & perception
  • Select suitable actuators, sensors, computational platforms, protection switch gear, communication methodologies and perform trade studies
  • Architect PLC, Microcontroller and PC based control system hardware using commercially available products
  • Design and develop automotive compliant analog and digital circuit schematics
  • Work with third parties to manufacture and test Printed Circuit Boards
  • Work with Software Engineers to help them in System Integration and Troubleshooting
  • Iteratively develop proof-of-concept implementations, prototypes and demos to fine-tune technologies to practical, state of the art systems
  • Ability to work hands-on in cross-functional teams with a strong sense of self-direction

 NON-ESSENTIAL:-

  • Develop an awareness of modern Electro-mechanical systems and design alternatives
  • Cultivate and disseminate knowledge of hardware design standards and best practices
  • Prepare reports and presentations on the status of the design and development process for discussion with management and/or team members
  • Direct research on emerging hardware products and standards in support of procurement and development efforts
  • Train, manage and provide guidance to junior staff
  • Perform all other duties as requested, directed or assigned

Qualifications And Experience:-

REQUIRED:-

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics/Instrumentation/Mechatronics Engineering (or related field)
  • Master’s degree in Electrical/Electronics/Instrumentation/Mechatronics Engineering (or related field)
  • Ten or more years of past experience working on analog and digital circuits
  • Hands-on PCB design experience for analog, digital and embedded (uP/FPGA/DSP) boards in ORCAD/ALTIUM/KiCAD/PROTEL or any similar CAD tool.
  • Hands on experience with various motors and drives
  • Hands on experience with proximity sensors, encoders, limit sensors, and sensor interface circuits
  • Strong understanding of various communication technologies such as RS232/422/485, I2C, SPI, CAN, etc.
  • Hands on experience in integrating SBCs, Microcontrollers or PLCs
  • Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience using DSO, Logic Analyzer, Multimeter, etc.
  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies
  • Competent and proficient understanding of Operating Systems such as Linux and Windows

DESIRED:-

  • Knowledge of Object Oriented Programming in C++ or Python is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge in theoretical Robotics, Guidance, Navigation and Control is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge in PLCs and PLC programming highly desirable
  • Knowledge in Motor Drives and Power Electronics is desirable
  • Passion to develop novel robotics solutions or knowledge of Robotic Operating System (ROS 2) desirable
  • Hands on experience in MATLAB/SIMULINK and/or any other simulation tool would be an advantage
  • Knowledge in Electro-Mechanical Systems and CAD drawings would be an advantage
  • Strong background in mathematics and/or statistics is highly desirable.
