Job Description

The EHS Officer/Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing all Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) functions at substation project sites. This role ensures full compliance with statutory regulations, client-specific standards, and internal EHS guidelines while promoting a culture of safety and environmental responsibility throughout the EPC project lifecycle, from site mobilization to commissioning.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:-

 EHS Planning & Compliance:-

  • Develop and implement EHS Plans tailored to substation construction activities in line with corporate policy, client requirements, and legal standards.
  • Ensure adherence to Indian legal frameworks and international standards such as OSHA, ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety), and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management).
  • Conduct risk assessments covering all substation construction phases: excavation, foundation, equipment erection, cable laying, GIS installation, and testing/commissioning.

Site Safety Supervision:-

  • Perform daily EHS inspections to identify hazards and ensure safe work practices.
  • Monitor high-risk activities including work at height (e.g., gantry erection), confined space entries (e.g., cable trenches, basements), crane operations, heavy lifting, and electrical installations.
  • Enforce the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure safe housekeeping practices.

Environmental Management:-

  • Oversee implementation of environmental safeguards including dust suppression, noise control, and hazardous material management.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of construction waste, oils, and chemicals.
  • Monitor environmental compliance with applicable laws and site-specific environmental management plans.

Training & Awareness:-

  • Conduct EHS inductions for all workers, subcontractors, and visitors.
  • Deliver regular toolbox talks and focused safety training sessions related to substation-specific risks.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness drives, visual aids, and recognition programs.

Incident Reporting & Investigation:-

  • Record all incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions in a structured manner.
  • Lead investigations using root cause analysis techniques and ensure effective implementation of corrective/preventive actions.
  • Maintain and communicate EHS statistics and dashboards as per reporting protocols.

Documentation & Audits:-

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation including Job Safety Analysis (JSA), risk assessments, inspection checklists, permits-to-work, and audit reports.
  • Support EHS compliance audits (internal and external) and ensure closure of non-conformities.
  • Monitor legal compliance and support site teams in maintaining audit readiness.

Emergency Preparedness:-

  • Develop and regularly update emergency response plans specific to substations (e.g., electrical shock, fire in GIS rooms, transformer oil spills).
  • Conduct regular emergency drills including fire, medical, and electrical incident simulations.
  • Ensure availability and readiness of emergency response equipment across the site.

Project Integration and Leadership:-

  • Collaborate with engineering, construction, and quality teams to integrate EHS in design reviews and construction planning.
  • Report deviations, unsafe conditions, and EHS performance to the Project Manager and Segment EHS Head.
  • Drive implementation of a strong EHS culture through visible leadership and engagement with field teams and subcontractors.
  • Liaise with local authorities and statutory bodies for EHS clearances and coordination.

Qualifications:-

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Post Diploma in Industrial Safety or Diploma in Industrial Safety from State Board of Technical Education certification is preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of EHS experience, preferably in EPC substation or power infrastructure projects.

Skills & Competencies:-

  • Strong knowledge of Indian EHS laws, rules, and regulations specific to substation works.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards and their application.
  • Proven ability to manage EHS in high-voltage substation environments with multiple contractors.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with digital tools like GIS, drone inspections, and EHS monitoring software is a plus.

  • ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management Systems)
  • ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System

  • Haryana, Tamil Nadu(On-site, with travel to multiple locations)
