Job Description

The Design to Cost engineer will be responsible for modeling the cost of drive systems and related products; namely the wind turbine main gearbox, pitch and yaw drives, and their lubrication (cooling) systems. This is also referred to as Should Cost Modeling or Should Costing. This person is responsible for supporting commercial negotiations that are grounded in should cost as well as support of engineering by illustrating what drives costs in a component. Further, they will be responsible for leading projects that reduce the cost of their components by working with and across the engineering and sourcing teams.

Essential Responsibilities:-

  • Expertise in the design and manufacturing of gearboxes and their lubrication systems
  • Accountable for modeling & analyzing the cost drivers of the wind turbine components
  • Collaborate with all functions (engineering, supply chain, sourcing, manufacturing, logistics, site installation, and finance) in the development of accurate should cost models based upon best design and manufacturing practice
  • Maintain a strong relationship and collaboration with the various product component design teams
  • Help to develop cost targets across the various product segments and component teams
  • Use technical expertise and/or manufacturing know-how to guide should cost accuracy
  • Visit suppliers and challenge with lean and best practices to optimize manufacturing processes

Required Qualifications:-

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in engineering
  • Ability and willingness to travel 25% of the time or more, when travel conditions are safe.

Preferred Qualifications/Characteristics:-

  • Experience designing or manufacturing gearboxes and lubrication systems
  • Experience with mechanical components and electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience with manufacturing practices of drive components
  • Gear/spline forming and case hardening techniques
  • Bearings and shafts
  • Casting and forging
  • Lubrication, filtration, and cooling
  • Experience with or good working knowledge of Wind Turbine
  • Maintains and fosters an open mind to unconventional manufacturing/sourcing methods
  • Comfortable with continuously challenging the status quo
  • Pro-activeness, sense of urgency, autonomy
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-locational environment;
  • Good analytical skills
  • Team player, positive, willingness to learn & adapt to business needs
  • Fluent in English (speaking and writing)
  • LEAN green belt
