Soon four million residents of Uttar Pradesh will get high tech smart meter, as the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission has cleared Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd’s petition regarding the same.

To be installed later in a phased manner, UPPCL had filed a petition seeking the approval of the regulatory commission for the installation of smart meters.

Energy Efficiency Service Limited (EESL) has been appointed to install the smart meters owing to their expertise in bulk procurement at low price.

The supply of meters will come from Genus, ITI, Zen and Koenics Meter and L&T has been chosen as the system integrator. HCL and Fluent Grid will be responsible for implanting the billing system. The selection of these companies was made by an international competitive bidding process by the UPPCL.

Across zones cover by five different distribution companies, UPPCL will be targeting around 4 million recipients of these smart meters. In Phase-1, towns with high energy input, more than 500 million units of consumption and high AT&C losses. Phase-2 will cater to the towns with an energy consumption of more than 250 million units and so on.

UPERC’s opinion that, “installation of smart meters is a national program and has resulted in benefits to the consumers as well as DISCOMs”, came after scrutinizing the petition and further examination of UPPCL’s response.

EESL, which is a joint venture between Power Ministry’s PSUs and the central government has partnered with multiple states to facilitate the transition to efficient energy devices.
