Telangana set to cross 5GW solar power generation capacity by 2019: Report

Solar Power Project

These solar projects were awarded during 2015 and are expected to be completed by December 2017. The Telangana government signed PPA for 3800 MW of power from these units and all of them are expected to be operational by March-June 2018.

Telangana is reportedly gearing up to cross the 5000 MW solar power generation capacity by 2019, which is more than the current installed capacity of 1300 MW. An official speaking to TOI said this was because the state adopted a distributed development model which is supported by the Centre

The publication notes that renewable energy capacity of the state will touch 3000 MW by the end of this year as the tendered projects are under execution and are expected to be commissioned as per schedule. According to the report these solar projects were awarded during 2015 and are expected to be completed by December 2017. The report states that the state government signed PPA for 3800 MW of power from these units and all of them are expected to be operational by March-June 2018.

When the 3000MW project becomes operation the state will hit milestone of achieving over 15% of total energy contribution from renewable energy sector and top the list in the country with the highest solar power generation.

The state government is also planning to encourage setting up of mini solar plants close to transformers to help provide power to agriculture sector with less transmission and distribution losses.

D Prabhakar Rao, Chairman and managing director of Telangana Transco and Genco speaking to TOI said “the per capita consumption in Telangana has gone up to 1,390 units per annum as against 1,100 units. Consumption in Telangana ranks high among States. The 24×7 power supply has started giving dividends in the forms of improved living standards and increased industrial production.

The state government is planning to come out with a new solar-wind hybrid policy to accelerate the growth of the renewable energy sector.
